I was on a Facebook page the other day where there was a serious need for someone, and saw someone else who was telling other people how they should pray in the sense that they should say things a certain way, saying to everybody to confess it is done before it is seen.  While I get that there is some insight on that for those who are there in that understanding, for many it comes off as legalistic. And when you get legalistic on people in telling them *exactly how* to approach the Father God in prayer, you discourage them and shut them down and then it does a work like the enemy.

Prayer is vital to the Christian life, and especially with young believers, you have to coach them with reasoning that is not legalistic.  Prayer is a heart thing.  If the heart is not engaged with the spirit, then all the "right" praying does no good.  The answers won't come.  We can mature in our prayers, and we definitely can get better at it, but we do because we want more from God and are seeking Him.  It's a heart thing!

Telling people to confess things a certain way or "like it's already done" may be okay for some, because they themselves have that vision inside in the Spirit, but if the others don't, it does not mean that God will not answer their prayers.  He will meet them where they are.  Some people get into their fantasy land on "positive" praying - it's for show - to look cool, like they have it together, but others just see or feel them as controlling.

Getting Rid of Legalism

We have got to get this "legalism" out of prayer and meet people where they are. Prayer is personal and when we can come together corporately and BE of the same spirit in pulling on God for a thing, it's an awesome thing.  But there is not a spirit of legalism in answered prayer.

There are many reasons why God does or does not answer prayer; it's certainly not all on "the how" we say a thing or two. When you are working with those in crisis, many times they are young believers and they are not ready for all "the rules" that may be enlightenment for you.

Let's break off this legalism and find the heart of love and reach the God who wants to answer the prayers for our good. Because those ARE His plans for us.

Jeremiah 29:11-13 "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart."

We don't tell God how a thing should be, He already knows! When we decree a thing, it is for the glory of God's Kingdom and His people. So then, if it's the devil and circumstances we are speaking to, our words are on us. They should have the power from within us to the degree that Christ is in us.  We shouldn't try to force those things on other people who may not be where we are yet.

There is Power in Positive Confession

We can encourage them! But there is more to prayer than our word-craft. Not everyone is able to stand up to the devil in the same ways we might be able to, because we have grown in that strength and have been equipped.  So we need to know that when all this "positive confession" is forced on people whose spirits are not fully ready for that, you only invite them to be kicked around because they may not be spiritually ready and prepared for all that.  It's not good.  It hurts the cause.

There is power in positive confession and for sure there is in praying the Scriptures, when we agree with God Spirit and are not negative.  But a lot of that prayer confidence in our spirit is based on our learned understanding.  A good outlook is always more helpful than a bad one.  But we don't order other people on how to pray, we coach them and encourage them and teach them with all humility.

This is a big deal. Too many are falling away and some of it is our fault! It makes us lose our strength.   More than once I have had people ruin prayer groups for me over this. I just backed off from them.  Can't do it like that.  It doesn't work for me and the power of agreement is lost.  We have to learn to respect other people.

God will show people amazing things in prayer and He will do awesome things as a result of it. Prayer is intimacy with God. And we know how intimacy gets abused in this day and age. Selah!

In this Manner

It's one thing to have a purpose for a group and to focus.  It's another when they try and take over your heart and language.  There are gifts of power through prayer that really are those angels you are unaware of.   It's like saying, "My husband or wife is a better lover than yours is!"  Really?  How would you know?  That is adultery!  We need to get the spirit right on this.

Intimacy is special and we often do not understand other people and often maybe we are just not supposed to!   But we still can respect and know who our God is.   Didn't Jesus call the Church His Bride?   Didn't the Apostle Paul call this the great mystery?

Jesus said "in this manner" this is how you pray - He didn't give them specific *words* they had to pray.  See Matthew 6:9.  He gave the disciples (aka: us) the guidelines in what we call The Lord's Prayer.   He said God is a Spirit and so those who connect with Him do so in Spirit and in Truth.

When we leave the Spirit of love and grace out of the equation, or don't give proper room for it, we miss the full connection power.  We can seek the Holy Spirit and He will help us! And we know His fruit, yes?  We can learn to get this right.

himble prayer

Thank you, I like this and you put into prayer something I have struggled with. I have also heard a teaching of the believers authority, I think this is intimate and individual too. Not all have the Holy Spirits authority when they pray because they may not have much of Him , Yet.Yet its good to know what our goal is, perhaps...? Or do you think we activate God so to speak when we declare , decree, and realize our authority in Christ?
